Anne Frank: A True Belieber

Justin Bieber. Let's be honest, we all go to Creighton Prep. We're all men. Honestly who here cares even the slightest for such prepubescent poser? The people visiting the Anne Frank Guest House last Friday sure didn't. Bieber allegedly stopped in at the historical site while on his European Tour with a couple of his friends. It's a heartwarming sight when a celebrity develops an interest and shows concern for some controversial topics in history. Sadly Bieber did no such thing. He commented on Anne Frank saying that he hopes she would be a Belieber if she were alive today.
This comment made literally everyone visiting the memorial on Friday infuriated. I, too, despise the Biebs with a burning passion, but he really didn't do anything wrong. He was just stating his opinion. The visitors that day did have a valid argument that Bieber was tarnishing the site by attracting people who only want to see him and disgracing Anne Frank's name by disregarding he pain and suffering, but did he really do anything wrong? I have a problem with his math as he claimed that if Anne were alive today, she would be a fan. Mr. Bieber, Miss Frank would be over 90 years old if she were alive today and therefore would find your music to be nothing more than complete and utter garbage. Anyways, Justin Bieber, no matter how terrible the name sounds, did not do anything wrong here. He was just trying to be sensible and show concern for a deceased potential fan, but what do I know? I'm only a teenager who's read Anne's diary.
Did Justin cross the line? Did the people overreact? Is the press out of stories? Should I stop asking all these questions? You decide.

Kate's Prom Date

Let's be honest, it would be ridiculously awesome to take Kate Upton to prom, but who actually has the guts to ask a celebrity out to prom? Jake Davidson, a senior from Sherman Oaks high school in Los Angeles, CA, posted a video on YouTube asking Upton to prom. The comical video is very creative and astonishingly enough seems to appeal to Upton. In the video, Davidson asked Upton if he could call her "Katie" instead of Kate. Upton later tweeted "You can call me Katie if you want! How could I turn down that video! I'll check my schedule ;)" as a response to Davidson's video. Before I go any further I'd like to point out that he should just feel lucky that Kate Upton actually cared enough to respond to that video, let alone even consider going to prom with him. Soon after Upton's response, she gave him a surprise call on the "Today" show during which Davidson assured Upton that if she accepted, they'd have a great time. Upton has not yet confirmed nor denied whether or not she will be attending Davidson's prom. She said if she's free, she will try to go.

First off, wow! That actually worked!?! What are the odds that Davidson's video would gain immense popularity and that Upton would watch this video? Although Upton has not yet said if she's free to go, it would definitely benefit her to go with him from a public sense. She would gain so much positive publicity if she went to prom with this boy. This actually isn't the first time something like this happened. Mila Kunis did a similar thing with a marine who asked her out. Suddenly Davidson's dreams aren't so far fetched. C'mon Kate! I'm pretty sure we all want to see you make this kid's dreams come true! Just do it! Plus he looks like a combination of Mac Miller and Frankie Muniz, whatever that's worth.
If you don't agree that these two should be together for one night, speak now or forever hold your peace.

To Judge a Mocking "Bird"

Everyone hates being on the wrong side of the legal system. Recently, a teen mocked a judge by flipping him the bird after he gave her additional jail time for saying "Adios" in a disrespectful way while leaving the courtroom. The original crime was jewelry theft but soon escalated to contempt of court. Eighteen-year-old Penelope Soto admitted to being under the influence of Xanax and alcohol during this hearing. This is blatantly obvious because no sane and sober human being would reference Rick Ross in front of a judge. She later apologized and the judge dropped her contempt charges and dismissed her sentence to 30-days in jail. Her lawyer stated that the she will be taking classes to cope with her drug problem. He also stated that if the sentence had gone through, it would have been classified as a felony. My extensive training that I have acquired from 10 classes of practical law has taught me that a felony is a crime that brings about a year or more in prison or a fine of $1000 or more.
The message I'm trying to convey is that a simple apology saved a teen from being a registered felon and having to pay a substantial amount of time and money. Think about that for a second. This teen whose sentence went from paying for some stolen jewelry to being in prison for over a year or paying more than $1000 got off by saying two simple words. I am in no way castigating our legal system for giving a first time offender a second chance with some much needed rehabilitation, but I do feel that something about this story is flawed. The judge had no right to drastically increase Soto's sentencing due to a remark that he thought was disrespectful (I am of course referring to the "Adios", not the crude hand gesture). Her actions during the hearing were not relevant to her original conviction and therefore should be dismissed or settled during a separate hearing. Our legal system, although still somewhat fair and balanced, still gives people like judges the sole authority to magnify sentences without proper reason. I've always believed that a crime and its consequence should stay constant no matter what occurs during the hearing.
If you, for some odd reason, believe that I am not giving judges enough credit, feel free to disagree with my opinion of the immense power we grant our mediocre judges. However, remember that Niccolo Machiavelli said "The acme of judicial distinction means the ability (for judges) to look a lawyer straight in the eyes for two hours and not to hear a word he says."

A Post to "Lighten" the Tension

What an amazing show of sheer athleticism and superiority during that Super Bowl! Everything was perfect until something unpredictable occurred. Just when it seemed that the Ravens had the game won, the lights went out for 34 minutes. This is no exaggeration. If you were absent for this once in a lifetime occurrence you missed 34 minutes of announcers apologizing and scrambling for techniques to keep us fans pleased. The worst part is that after all this chaos, the 49ers came back with a near impossible and completely unexpected scoring streak. This change in momentum was a key factor in Sunday's colossal showdown.
I personally did not mind this commotion at first, but soon I discovered that it would not end soon.So as I sat there, bored and unimpressed, I realized that I forgot to blog this week. I started reading the blogs to get a feel for what kind of tone was being set this week. After reading numerous posts about kidnappings and other depressing topics, I decided that it would be nice to lighten the tension with a painful half hour that we all experienced.
My thoughts on what happened are pretty plain. I could not stand it. The whole game was supposed to be a nonstop entertainment phenomenon, but instead our attention span slowly started to fade as our interests were hindered by the blandness of a dark and bleak stadium. I believe that the NFL should have some sort of backup plan for something like this. I would have even accepted reruns of the funny commercials. Sadly non of this occurred and we were all forced to wait 34 minutes for something that we had been preparing for since the start of autumn. I don't ask for much, just one night where we can all watch the Super Bowl in peace.
Since I know we were all in torment for those horrible 34 minutes, I would like you to share your experiences on how you felt this "2nd Halftime" went and how/if it can be fixed for future occurrences.

The Most Dangerous Game

It's finally here! Today is the day! You've been preparing for this since Summer's end! Soon your favorite college football team, The Nebraska Cornhuskers, will start off their season with an astounding victory. You've gathered your friends and family from afar to witness athletic superiority at its finest. You are awestruck by the phenomenal speed and evasiveness your players have shown, but what really catches your eye was the power given off from that hit by your favorite defensive lineman. A bone crushing sound ensues, but all you notice is the spectacular play your team just executed.
It's common for one to get caught up in the excitement of a sport without realizing the dangers of it. President Obama recently spoke out about the safety of one of our nation's favorite past times. In an interview, the President talked about how the NCAA should make college football safer as it would still allow for exciting football without fans having to "examine their consciences" quite as much. The President makes a reasonable claim. It's not uncommon to see multiple concussions, broken bones and torn muscles each week, but I feel that this adds even more value to the game as it forces players to realize that this is more than a game, it is a way of life. What I mean by this is that players must consider the potential consequences of being an athlete.
The President was right for being concerned about the health and safety of others, but I believe that he did not fully consider his thoughts on the matter. The intent of football players is not to injure the opposing team, but to win a game as a union. While the President could have condemned sports like boxing where the goal is to injure the opponent to the point where chronic injury is probable, he chose to castigate college football for being a little edgy. I personally believe that the rules are fine and any refinement would hinder the exhilaration of the game. I may be wrong and the President may have suggested a necessary improvement. You decide.

A Hoax Within a Hoax

Notre Dame’s devastating loss against Alabama was not the only news to report after the BCS Title game. Notre Dame LB Manti Te’o is now synonymous with the word “hoax” after he reported that his alleged girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, had recently died of Leukemia. It’s no secret that Te’o’s girlfriend was imaginary, but why would Manti make up such a deep and heart wrenching story in the first place? Did he want attention or pity? Many currently see this as a publicity stunt, but Te’o claims that he was unaware that she didn’t exist. He says that he was convinced that the girl he was talking to was in fact Lennay Kekua.

This theory in and of itself may seem completely irrational, but Te’o continues to claim that not even he knew that Kekua was fake. I personally believe Te’o for a few reasons. The first of which being that Te’o had no reason to make up a fake girlfriend. Te’o was a Heisman Trophy finalist and a prestigious recruit for the upcoming NFL draft. The point being that Te’o had so much going for him that he would not need the additional attention or sympathy. My next reason is that Te’o admitted to never meeting her in person. Although this kind of defeats the purpose of being a couple, it shows that Te’o could not have known about this prior to her sudden “death.”

Although this case is still up in the air, I personally have a feeling that Te’o is telling the truth. Evidence is being revealed by the moment so feel free to challenge my theory.

Matt

My life began as I was born 2 months prematurely in my one and only home, Omaha, Nebraska. As I grew up, I was very close to my older brother who did such things with me as teach me how to play guitar. I’ve been playing guitar in a band with my friends since our 7th grade year. I am currently into watching a lot of movies with favorites being anything by Christopher Nolan. Later in life I plan to move to Michigan for the sole reason that I like their football team. I will, of course, move there during my college years and study criminal law so that I may live out my days as a lawyer in Michigan.
